The Academic Reading test consists of three texts and 40 questions, all to be completed in 60 minutes. That is just 1.5 minutes per question, leaving no extra time to read all three texts word-for-word. To survive and thrive, you must stop treating the exam like a leisure novel and start treating it like a search-and-find puzzle.

1. The 3 Pillars: Skimming, Scanning, and Close Reading

Do not start by reading the text from paragraph one. Instead, follow these steps:

  • Skimming (1-2 mins): Fast-read the title, headings, first paragraph, and the first sentence of each body paragraph. This gives you a mental map of what the text is about and where information is stored.
  • Scanning (30 secs per question): Read the question, find keywords (like names, years, specific terminologies), and run your eyes quickly down the text to locate those exact keywords.
  • Close Reading: Once you locate the correct paragraph, read the surrounding sentences slowly and carefully to extract the answer.

2. Manage the 20-20-20 Myth

Many textbooks tell you to spend 20 minutes on each passage. This is flawed advice. The passages usually get progressively harder: Passage 1 is simpler, while Passage 3 is much more academic and dense. Try this division instead: 15 minutes on Passage 1, 20 minutes on Passage 2, and 25 minutes on Passage 3. This gives you a time cushion for the hardest questions.

3. Answer as You Go

Unlike the Listening test, there is **no transfer time** at the end of the Reading test. You must write your answers directly onto the answer sheet. Do not wait until the last 5 minutes to transfer 40 answers—this leads to panic, skipped lines, and massive marking errors. Transfer your answers immediately after completing each passage.

4. Don't Get Stuck on a Single Question

If you can't find an answer within 1.5 minutes, **make a guess and move on**. Every question carries the same weight. Leaving a simple question unanswered in Passage 3 because you spent 4 minutes arguing with a True/False/Not Given question in Passage 1 is a guaranteed way to lower your band score.
