IELTS Reading summary completion asks you to fill gaps in a condensed version of part of a passage. First check whether you must take words from the text or select from a supplied list. Then use the sentence grammar to predict the type of answer and the passage to establish its exact meaning.

Let the instructions control your answer

For a task using words from the text, copy the required wording and respect the stated word limit. For a task with a word list, follow the instructions about recording words or option letters. An answer that seems sensible can still fail if it uses the wrong format.

Read the whole summary before choosing the first gap. Identify its subject and the relationship between sentences. The summary normally covers a section of the passage rather than every paragraph, and its answers may not follow the same order as the text. Locate the relevant section instead of repeatedly searching the entire passage.

Predict grammar, then verify meaning

In “The equipment was stored in a ___,” the gap probably needs a singular countable noun or noun phrase. In “The new method was ___,” an adjective may fit. These predictions narrow your search, but they cannot prove the answer. Several words can fit grammatically while only one matches the passage.

Look for paraphrases around the gap. “Kept” may correspond to “stored,” while “less water” may correspond to “reduced water use.” Do not demand that every word in the summary appears unchanged in the passage. For text-based answers, however, the word you submit should come from the passage as instructed.

Try an original mini exercise

Practice passage: A community garden installed sensors to measure soil moisture. Volunteers used the readings to decide when to water the vegetable beds. During the trial, water use fell, although the total harvest remained unchanged. The equipment was kept in a locked cabinet overnight.

Instruction: Complete the summary using ONE WORD ONLY from the passage for each gap.

The garden used (1) ___ to monitor soil moisture. Decisions about watering were made by (2) ___. Despite lower water use, the (3) ___ did not change. At night, the equipment was stored in a (4) ___.

Try all four answers before checking the explanations below. This is a short reading exercise, not an official IELTS question or a realistic measure of your band.

Check the evidence for each answer

  1. sensors: These are the devices installed to measure moisture. “Readings” are the information they produce, not the devices.
  2. volunteers: They used the readings to decide when watering was needed.
  3. harvest: “Remained unchanged” matches “did not change.” “Total harvest” exceeds the one-word limit.
  4. cabinet: This names the storage location. “Locked cabinet” contains two words, so it does not follow the instruction.

Read the completed summary aloud. Every answer should fit both the grammar and the evidence. If your choice only works after changing the surrounding sentence, return to the passage.

Turn mistakes into a targeted drill

Label errors as location, meaning, grammar or answer format. If you found the right sentence but wrote too many words, extra scanning practice will not address the problem. Practise trimming answers to the stated limit. If you chose a nearby noun with the wrong meaning, explain the contrast between your answer and the correct one.
