The short answer

For Speaking Part 1, answer the question directly and add a relevant reason or detail. Practise flexible responses about familiar experiences rather than memorising long speeches that may not fit the examiner's question.

Extend an answer without turning it into a speech

A yes-or-no answer gives little evidence of your English. A long monologue can wander away from a simple question. Start with the answer, then explain one reason, give an example or make a short comparison. Treat this as a way to develop ideas, not a fixed sentence-count rule.

Choose details you can describe comfortably. If you rarely cook, explain that honestly instead of inventing an elaborate story about a hobby you cannot discuss. Familiar content leaves more attention available for grammar and pronunciation.

Try these original practice questions

Record one answer to each question without writing a script first. Change the order on your second attempt so you have to listen to the question rather than repeat a sequence.

  • Which part of your home do you use most?
  • Has the way you travel to work or study changed?
  • Do you prefer making plans or deciding things at the last minute?
  • What kind of weather makes your day easier?

Listen for one improvement at a time

On the first replay, check whether you answered the question. On the second, notice unfinished sentences or repeated fillers. Choose one issue for the next recording; trying to correct everything at once often makes delivery less natural.

Repeat the question with a different example rather than copying the original answer word for word. This builds the ability to express the same idea in several ways. Keep both recordings and compare how easily a listener can follow them, not just how many advanced words they contain.

Before your next attempt

  • I answered the actual question before adding detail.
  • My supporting example is relevant and easy to explain.
  • I can answer again without reciting the same wording.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Part 1 answer be?

There is no official sentence count for each answer. Give a direct response with enough relevant development, and follow the examiner's lead.

Should I memorise answers about my hometown?

Prepare ideas and useful vocabulary, but practise changing the wording and responding to different questions.
