The short answer
Work towards Band 7 by comparing your current performance with the published criteria, identifying repeated weaknesses and checking improvement on fresh tasks. An overall target and a minimum score in every skill are different requirements.
Define the target precisely
Write down both the overall score you need and any minimum in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A strong result in one skill may raise the average without satisfying a separate minimum in another. Your study priorities should reflect the requirement you actually need to meet.
Use several recent attempts to establish a baseline. A single practice score can be influenced by familiarity with the topic, remembered questions or the conditions of the attempt. Label AI-generated bands as estimates and compare them with the written feedback.
Replace vague goals with observable changes
Improve writing is too broad to guide a session. A useful target describes what will be different in the next response. For productive skills, use the published assessment criteria to organise review without assuming one trick will determine the entire band.
Measure consistency, not your best attempt
For Reading and Listening, record raw scores and the reasons for wrong answers. Use appropriate conversion guidance for the test type and remember that raw-score boundaries can vary. For Writing and Speaking, look for recurring feedback across tasks, then review whether the specific issue is improving.
Schedule a fresh checkpoint after a period of targeted practice. If results remain uneven, investigate which task types or conditions cause the variation. Progress is easier to assess when you can explain both what improved and what still fails under time pressure.

Frequently asked questions
Does advanced vocabulary guarantee Band 7?
No. Vocabulary is only part of the assessment, and accuracy, relevance and development also matter. Unnatural word choices can weaken an answer.
Can a high overall score hide a weaker skill?
It can in the average, but a receiving organisation may also require a minimum in each skill. Check both requirements.
