IELTS Matching Information: Locate Specific Evidence

Find examples, reasons and comparisons in IELTS Reading paragraphs using a passage map and a focused evidence-search routine.

The short answer

Matching information asks where a particular detail appears. Identify the kind of evidence requested, scan for its meaning and verify the paragraph. Unlike matching headings, the answer may be a small detail rather than the paragraph's main idea.

Label the information you are looking for

Before scanning, decide whether the question requests a reason, an example, a comparison, a date or a description of a problem. The phrase a reason why a plan was delayed is a different search target from a description of the completed plan.

Underline distinctive anchors such as a named location or technical term, but expect paraphrases around them. A question about reduced costs may correspond to a passage about spending less. Matching the meaning is more reliable than searching for an identical phrase.

Make a light passage map

After a quick read, write a few words beside each paragraph to record what it covers. Keep this brief enough that it saves time. The map helps narrow a search, but it cannot replace checking the exact evidence.

Confirm the detail before moving on

Read the sentence before and after a possible match. Check that the information refers to the correct person, project or period. A paragraph may compare two schemes, and an isolated phrase can belong to the wrong one.

Some tasks allow a paragraph letter to be used more than once; follow the instructions for the specific set. During review, classify mistakes as wrong location or wrong interpretation. If location is the problem, practise mapping and scanning. If interpretation is the problem, slow down and analyse the sentence relationships before doing another timed set.

Before your next attempt

  • I know whether I need a reason, example or comparison.
  • I verified the surrounding context.
  • I checked the instructions about reusing paragraph letters.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from matching headings?

Headings summarise the main idea of a paragraph. Matching information locates a specific detail, which may occupy only one sentence.

Should I assume the answers follow passage order?

Do not rely on that assumption for matching information. Use the question meaning and your passage map to locate each answer.
