The short answer

Prepare for General Training Reading by practising everyday, workplace and longer general-interest texts. Train yourself to notice conditions and exceptions as well as the main message, and review exactly where each answer is supported.

Use the right range of texts

General Training Reading uses a different mix of texts from Academic Reading. Its three sections move through everyday material, work-related material and a longer general-interest text. Use practice material labelled for your test type so that your preparation reflects that range.

Everyday language can still contain demanding details. A notice may distinguish opening hours from last admission, or eligible applicants from people who may ask for information. Treat these conditions carefully rather than assuming a familiar topic will be easy.

Read conditions as part of the answer

Circle time limits, exceptions and requirements when reviewing practice. Ask whether the question is about availability, eligibility or permission; these are related but different meanings.

Combine accuracy drills with full sections

Start with short sets in which you explain every answer using a phrase from the text. Then complete a full section under time pressure. Track whether errors come from vocabulary, overlooked conditions or running out of time. Each cause needs a different response.

For longer texts, write a brief paragraph map and practise distinguishing the main point from supporting examples. Save a fresh full test for a later checkpoint. Reusing the same questions can make your score look better because you remember answers, even when the underlying reading skill has not changed.

Frequently asked questions

Is General Training Reading identical to Academic Reading?

Should I only practise short notices?

No. Include workplace material and longer passages so that you prepare for all three sections.
