IELTS Listening Maps: Track Position and Direction

Practise IELTS map and plan labelling by locating the starting point, following turns and distinguishing nearby landmarks.

The short answer

Before a map-labelling recording begins, identify the entrance, fixed landmarks and any orientation marks. Follow the speaker's route from the stated starting point, using landmarks to confirm each turn and destination.

Orient yourself before the route starts

Find labels already provided on the map and note the difference between paths, rooms and open areas. If there is a compass, use it; do not assume a direction that the diagram does not establish. The entrance may be on any side of the page.

Read the answer options and identify what needs labelling. Sometimes you choose a letter; sometimes you supply a word. Following the route correctly is only half the job if you enter the wrong answer format.

Track direction from the traveller's viewpoint

Left and right depend on the direction of travel. Mentally place yourself at the speaker's starting point and turn with the route. Confirm position using an unchanged landmark such as a reception desk or central courtyard.

Recover using the next fixed landmark

If you lose the route, listen for a named location that you can find immediately. Re-establish position there instead of trying to reconstruct every earlier turn while new instructions continue. Words such as opposite, beyond and between describe relationships that can help you recover.

For practice, draw a simple plan and describe two routes through it aloud. Then ask someone to follow your instructions, or record them and test yourself later. Review mistakes by marking the precise turn where your assumed position diverged from the route. This targets spatial language rather than general listening speed.

Before your next attempt

  • I found the starting point and existing labels.
  • I track left and right from the direction of travel.
  • I know whether the answer requires a letter or a word.

Frequently asked questions

Should I assume north is at the top?

Use the diagram's orientation marks and the recording. Do not add an unsupported compass direction to a plan that does not provide one.

What should I do if I miss one location?

Use the next named landmark to recover and continue. Avoid losing several later answers while trying to reconstruct one missed turn.
