The short answer
The overall IELTS band is the average of the four skill scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. Always check individual skill requirements too: an acceptable overall score does not automatically satisfy every minimum.
Calculate the average before rounding
Add the Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, then divide by four. IELTS reports the overall result in whole or half bands. According to its scoring guidance, an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
Do not confuse raw scores with bands
Listening and Reading answers produce raw marks that are converted into bands. The published conversion guidance gives reference points, and exact boundaries can vary between test versions. Academic and General Training Reading should not be treated as interchangeable conversion tables.
Writing and Speaking are assessed using performance criteria rather than a simple count of correct answers. An essay with fewer grammar mistakes is not automatically stronger if it fails to answer the question. Review the complete response, not one isolated feature.
Use practice estimates for decisions about study
A practice platform's band estimate can help identify weaknesses and compare attempts, but it is not an official IELTS Test Report Form. Automated feedback may vary with the task and response, so look for recurring patterns rather than reacting to every half-band movement.
Keep a record of several fresh attempts under similar conditions. If your target requires a minimum in Writing, spend time improving Writing even when stronger Reading results lift your average. A useful score record should guide your next study session, not merely display your best overall number.
