Some people believe university students should study only subjects related to their future careers. Others believe they should study a wider range of subjects. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some people believe that university students should study only subjects related to their future careers, while others think they should explore a wider range of topics. I believe that career preparation is important, but students should also have opportunities to study outside their main subject. A limited amount of choice can support both professional and personal development.

The main reason for concentrating on career subjects is that students need practical knowledge before they start work. For example, an engineering student must understand how materials behave before designing a bridge. If too much course time is spent on unrelated subjects, there may be less time to practise these essential skills. Students also pay considerable fees, so it is understandable that they expect their degree to help them find employment. For these reasons, the core of a course should remain connected to its professional purpose.

However, other subjects can be useful too. A science student who takes a writing course may become better at explaining research to the public. In a similar way, studying history can help business students understand why different communities respond differently to change. These experiences give students different perspectives and help them think about problems. They are useful in many situations and can make students more confident. Universities should therefore offer these subjects because they are useful for students and their future.

In conclusion, universities should give priority to the knowledge students need for their chosen careers, while leaving some room for other interests. I would support a small number of optional modules alongside compulsory professional courses. This balance would allow students to develop a clear specialism without limiting their education to a single area.

Feedback across the four criteria

IELTSRISE editorial comments for learning. No official or AI-generated band score is assigned to this sample.

01 · Task response

What works: The introduction states a position, both views are addressed, and the conclusion proposes optional modules alongside a professional core.

Look at: “They are useful in many situations”

Next revision: Develop this broad claim with one situation, a mechanism and a consequence. Explain how a wider subject helps a student perform a specific task.

02 · Coherence and cohesion

What works: The essay moves from the case for career subjects to the value of broader study, then gives a balanced conclusion.

Look at: “These experiences” and “They” in the third paragraph

Next revision: Make the reference more precise. Replace a vague pronoun with the skill being discussed, and use the remaining space to explain its effect rather than adding another general claim.

03 · Lexical resource

What works: Words such as “essential skills”, “optional modules” and “specialism” express the topic clearly.

Look at: “useful” appears repeatedly in the third paragraph

Next revision: Revise the idea before reaching for a synonym. Describe the benefit directly, such as explaining technical findings to a non-specialist audience.

04 · Grammatical range and accuracy

What works: The sample combines simple statements with controlled conditional and subordinate clauses, including the sentence beginning “If too much course time”.

Look at: “These experiences give students different perspectives and help them think about problems.”

Next revision: Try a relevant relative clause to specify the students or context. Keep the relationship clear; longer sentences alone do not improve an assessment.

One revision, explained

Before

These experiences give students different perspectives and help them think about problems. They are useful in many situations and can make students more confident.

After

For instance, scientists who learn to write for non-specialists can explain a project’s risks to local residents. This makes their technical knowledge more accessible and helps the community take part in decisions.

The revision develops the earlier writing-course example. It identifies the audience, explains the benefit and uses a relative clause for a specific purpose. This is a local improvement, not evidence of a particular band score.

How it works

Useful Writing Task 2 feedback connects a specific part of an essay to an assessment criterion and a concrete revision. This original sample demonstrates that process across task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. It is a teaching example, not an official examiner assessment or an automated essay checker.

  1. Read the question and sample essay, then identify one strength and one weakness yourself.
  2. Compare your observations with the four feedback sections below.
  3. Study the paragraph revision, then apply the same review process to your own essay.
